The Portuguese pet supplies chain Ornimundo has opened its 25th outlet at a retail park in the city of Viseu, which is located in the centre of Portugal. Viseu has a population of roughly 100 000, rising to 395 000 if the outer suburbs are included. Ornimundo belongs to the wholesale company Propet and is owned by the Moura family.
There are reportedly approximately 800 pet stores in Portugal, and their numbers have declined over the years. Only around ten per cent of these form part of organised store chains; the rest are typical "corner shops", mostly with retail areas averaging around 60 m².
